Eclipses in 2027
- 6 February: annular solar eclipse. The Moon covers the centre of the Sun and leaves a bright ring. It happens at the new moon of 6 Feb, 15:56 UTC.
- 20 February: penumbral lunar eclipse, a slight shading of the full moon, seen from the Americas, Europe, Africa and Asia.
- 18 July: penumbral lunar eclipse, seen from eastern Africa, Asia, Australia and the Pacific.
- 2 August: total solar eclipse. The path of totality crosses southern Spain, Gibraltar, Morocco, Algeria, Tunisia, Libya, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Yemen and Somalia, with more than six minutes of totality near Luxor.
- 17 August: penumbral lunar eclipse, seen from the Pacific and the Americas.

Worked examples: converting to local time
- Full moon, 22 Jan, 12:17 UTC. New York is on Eastern Standard Time (UTC−5) in January, so it is 07:17 the same morning. Sydney is on daylight time (UTC+11), so it is 23:17 that evening.
- Full moon, 19 Jun, 00:44 UTC. Los Angeles is on Pacific Daylight Time (UTC−7) in June, so it is 17:44 on Friday 18 June, the day before. London is on BST (UTC+1), so it is 01:44 on Saturday 19 June.
- New moon, 27 Dec, 20:12 UTC. Sydney (UTC+11) sees it at 07:12 on Tuesday 28 December.
How the times are worked out
The phase times come from the US Naval Observatory's Astronomical Applications Department, which calculates them from its lunar and solar ephemerides. They are in Universal Time and rounded to the nearest minute. A phase is the moment the Moon's ecliptic longitude is 0° (new), 90° (first quarter), 180° (full) or 270° (last quarter) from the Sun's, so it is the same instant everywhere on Earth. The time zone menu converts it with your browser's time zone rules, including daylight saving time.
The new moon matters for lunar calendars: see the Islamic calendar 2027, Ramadan 2027, Chinese New Year 2027 and Hindu festivals 2027. For the days themselves, open the 2027 calendar.
Questions
How many full moons are there in 2027?
There are 12 full moons and 13 new moons in 2027 (UTC). No month has two full moons, so there is no calendar Blue Moon in 2027. August has two new moons (2 Aug and 31 Aug).
When is the first full moon of 2027?
The first full moon of 2027 is the Wolf Moon on Friday, 22 January 2027 at 12:17 UTC, which is 07:17 in New York and 23:17 in Sydney.
When is the Harvest Moon in 2027?
The Harvest Moon is the full moon nearest the September equinox. In 2027 it is on Wednesday 15 September at 23:03 UTC, eight days before the equinox. The next full moon, the Hunter's Moon, is on Friday 15 October.
Are there eclipses in 2027?
Yes. There is an annular solar eclipse on 6 February and a total solar eclipse on 2 August, which crosses southern Spain, North Africa, Egypt and Saudi Arabia. There are also three faint penumbral lunar eclipses, on 20 February, 18 July and 17 August.
Why is the full moon on a different date in my country?
Each phase happens at one instant worldwide. The table gives that instant in UTC; once you convert it to local time, places far east or west can land on the next or previous day. Pick your time zone above to see your local dates.
Does the new moon start the Islamic month?
Not directly. The new moon (conjunction) cannot be seen. An Islamic month starts after the thin crescent is sighted, usually one or two evenings later, or by a calculated calendar such as Umm al-Qura. For example, the new moon is on 6 Feb at 15:56 UTC, and Ramadan 1448 is expected to begin on 8 February 2027.
