The rules
- US and Canada: second Sunday in March to first Sunday in November, at 2:00 local time (US Energy Policy Act of 2005). Canadian provinces that change use the same dates, but Alberta and British Columbia stop changing from November 2026 (see below).
- UK, Ireland and the EU: last Sunday in March to last Sunday in October, at 01:00 UTC, so the UK, Ireland and every EU country change at the same moment. Some other European countries, such as Russia, Belarus and Turkey, do not change at all.
- Australia: first Sunday in October to first Sunday in April, in the five states and territories that use daylight saving.
- New Zealand: last Sunday in September to first Sunday in April.
Worked examples
- US, spring 2027. 1 March 2027 is a Monday, so the first Sunday is 7 Mar and the second is 14 Mar. That is the day daylight saving time starts. In November, 1 November is a Monday, so the first Sunday, and the end of daylight time, is 7 Nov.
- UK, 2027. 31 March 2027 is a Wednesday, so the last Sunday in March is 28 Mar. 31 October 2027 is a Sunday, so the clocks go back on 31 Oct.
Time differences change too
Because countries change on different days, the gap between them moves during the year. Hours London is ahead of New York and behind Sydney in 2027:
| Period | London ahead of New York | Sydney ahead of London |
|---|---|---|
| 1 Jan โ 13 Mar | 5 h | 11 h |
| 14 Mar โ 27 Mar | 4 h | 11 h |
| 28 Mar โ 3 Apr | 5 h | 10 h |
| 4 Apr โ 2 Oct | 5 h | 9 h |
| 3 Oct โ 30 Oct | 5 h | 10 h |
| 31 Oct โ 6 Nov | 4 h | 11 h |
| 7 Nov โ 31 Dec | 5 h | 11 h |
So a weekly 3 pm London call is 10 am in New York for most of the year, but 11 am between 14 Mar and 27 Mar, and again between 31 Oct and 6 Nov. To count working days around these dates, use the working days calculator.
Places with no clock changes
In the US, Hawaii, most of Arizona (the Navajo Nation does change), Puerto Rico, Guam, the US Virgin Islands and American Samoa stay on standard time all year. In Canada, most of Saskatchewan and all of Yukon do not change, and from November 2026 neither do Alberta (permanent Alberta Time) or British Columbia (permanent Pacific time): their clocks went forward on 8 March 2026 and stay there. In Australia, Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory stay on standard time. Mexico stopped seasonal changes in 2022, except some towns on the US border. India, Pakistan, the UAE, Saudi Arabia, China, Japan, Singapore, South Africa and Nigeria do not use daylight saving time.

Questions
When do the clocks go back in 2027?
In the UK and Ireland the clocks go back on Sunday, 31 October 2027 at 2:00 local summer time (BST in the UK, IST in Ireland), back to 1:00 GMT, so you gain an hour. The EU changes at the same moment. In the US and most of Canada they go back a week later, on Sunday 7 November, at 2:00 local time.
When does daylight saving time start in 2027?
In the US and Canada it starts on Sunday, 14 March 2027, when clocks jump from 2:00 to 3:00. In the UK, Ireland and the EU summer time starts on Sunday 28 March. You lose an hour of sleep that night.
When do the clocks change in Australia in 2027?
Daylight saving ends on Sunday 4 April at 3:00 (clocks go back to 2:00) and starts again on Sunday 3 October at 2:00 (forward to 3:00) in New South Wales, Victoria, the ACT, Tasmania and South Australia. Queensland, Western Australia and the Northern Territory do not change their clocks.
Do the clocks go forward or back in spring?
Forward. The rule of thumb is "spring forward, fall back": in spring the clocks go forward one hour (you lose an hour), and in autumn they go back one hour (you gain one).
Is the US ending daylight saving time?
Not yet. The US House passed the Sunshine Protection Act, which would make daylight time permanent, on 14 July 2026 (308 to 117), but it still needs the Senate and the President. Until a law changes, the US dates on this page follow the Energy Policy Act of 2005. Last checked 15 October 2026.
Is the EU stopping the clock changes?
The European Parliament voted in 2019 to end seasonal clock changes, but the member states have not agreed on it, so Directive 2000/84/EC still applies: summer time from the last Sunday in March to the last Sunday in October, at 01:00 UTC everywhere in the EU.
